Beating Final Exam Stress

It’s the most wonderful time of the year….final exams! Students in psychology, to journalism, to nursing and everything in between are starting to feel the pressure. If you’re a student yourself, you know this feeling all too well. Fear not – there are a few simple ways to deal with final exam stress. Whether you can integrate all, or even just one of these tips into your final exam studying, they’ll help you make it through!

Disconnect from text messages and social media. As tempting as it is to check updates and text messages while you’re studying, putting your phone away and on silent eliminates a major distraction!

Find some studying tunes to play quietly in the background. The right music should put you in a “study zone” rather than distract you. Check out these playlists created just for homework and studying:

Get your beauty sleep and aim to get at least 7-8 hours of shut eye each night!

Don’t cram! The most effective way to study is to expose yourself to the material as many times as possible, over time, and in as many ways as you can (reading, writing, reciting verbally, etc).

Cool it on the caffeine. As tempting as it is to throw back a double expresso or fizzy energy drink, get your caffeine fix in moderation! Too much caffeine may actually interfere with your ability to focus.

Take a brain-break! Your brain can focus for about half an hour until you need to rest it. Try dividing a long study session into a few smaller ones.

Eat right instead of snacking on junk food. Get the energy you need from fruits, veggies, nuts, and whole grain foods. For more ideas, check out this list of the top 10 foods to boost your brainpower:

Treat yourself for working hard! There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself with an episode of your favourite show, candy, a fancy latte, a bubble bath, or whatever brings you happiness following a focused study session.

Happy studying! (And good luck!)
